When it comes to replacing the starter solenoid on a lawn mower, there are a few key considerations. If the starter motor is turning on and creating a consistent hum, the issue likely lies with the solenoid, which should be replaced. However, if the starter motor is not turning on, the brushes in the starter motor may be worn out, necessitating a replacement of the entire starter assembly.
To determine if the solenoid is faulty, turn the ignition key to the "On" position and touch the metal shaft of a screwdriver to the large terminal posts on the solenoid where the thick red wires are connected. If the engine starts, the solenoid is bad and should be replaced.
The solenoid is typically located near the starter motor and can be easily identified by tracing the red cable from the battery's positive terminal directly to the solenoid.
