The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between socioeconomic status and academic achievement among secondary school students. The study was conducted in a metropolitan area of a developing country. A total of 500 students from 10 secondary schools were randomly selected to participate in the research. Socioeconomic status was measured using a composite index that included parental education, occupation, and household income. Academic achievement was assessed through the students' performance on standardized tests in core subjects such as mathematics, science, and language arts.

The results of the study revealed a significant positive correlation between socioeconomic status and academic achievement. Students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds consistently outperformed their peers from lower socioeconomic backgrounds across all subject areas. Furthermore, the study found that parental education level was the strongest predictor of academic achievement, followed by household income and parental occupation.

The findings suggest that the educational system in the country may not be providing equal opportunities for students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Students from low-income families may face various challenges, such as limited access to educational resources, inadequate support at home, and financial constraints that hinder their academic progress.

The study highlights the need for policymakers and educational authorities to implement targeted interventions and support systems to address the educational disparities. Potential strategies may include providing additional funding and resources to schools in disadvantaged areas, offering tutoring and mentoring programs, and implementing policies that promote social and economic inclusion.

Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of socioeconomic inequality, such as unequal access to quality education, job opportunities, and social services. By addressing these systemic issues, the educational system can become more equitable and provide all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background, with the opportunity to reach their full academic potential.

In conclusion, the findings of this study underscore the significant impact of socioeconomic status on academic achievement among secondary school students. The results call for a comprehensive approach to educational reform that prioritizes equity and social justice, aiming to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.
